A message from MECDA's Central Board

May 2, 2007

A letter was mailed to MECDA members from a "Concerned Committee." This is our response which will be sent to All Mecda Members who have given us their email addresses.

MECDA was formed as an organization to improve wages and conditions for Bellydancers. We have accomplished that - and we have moved on to become a needed communications organization to provide unity and service to all dance communities throughout the United States.

As to our finances: We have a direct connection between receipts and 1099's to all payments, which are made by check; we have no credit cards. There is no money missing from MECDA.

We did pay a penalty to the IRS for one year when Treasurers were changing offices, and our statement was late. This was years ago, and it was not a big issue: Once in 30 years is a great record.

We have about 20 individuals working in the Central Board and the Cairo Carnivale. For them to receive an average of $1,300 a year means about $100 a month. This may not even account for the gas money they spend to do their job.

Officer qualifications change according to what computer skills are available for them to do their jobs in the best and easiest manner.
If an individual on the Board does not perform competently, they are replaced.

We had a request to sub out our 'treasurer' position to an accountant. He would only enter our materials into "Quicken," no judgement of the appropriateness of the invoice, no response to members, no attendance at meetings. Data entry is only a small part of what the MECDA Treasurer does. He was not useful to us.

Obviously, all MECDA members are valued and treated equally. Each MECDA member pays a maximum of $50 to join - they receive $74.00 worth of publications (Chronicles, Happenings, Directory) in return, as well as discounts on events and products. We make up for the difference between this amount and your membership fee from revenue generated by the Cairo Carnivale.

The individuals who sent you that letter didn't even trust you to vote the way they want even after reading their distortions and lies. They expect you to send them your blank ballot with the required envelope to them - so they can vote instead of you!

The current MECDA Board has worked very hard to accomplish communications, events, and services for members across the country.

FYI:

MECDA'S CODE OF CONDUCT includes the following: "Personal information obtained in private will be respected as such. Members will not repeat gossip that could be detrimental to the welfare and happiness of others."

AND Furthermore:

Article IX of the MECDA Bylaws states: "Names, addresses, phone numbers and other pertinent information of and about MECDA members will be kept in confidence by the officers so entrusted for the sole reason of conducting MECDA affairs, and will not be released without permission of the specific member(s) involved."

It is unknown at this time who provided the confidential names and addresses of MECDA's membership, but this situation is currently under investigation. If the person(s) involved in releasing the confidential information are discovered, pertinent action will be taken.

Please contact all members in your chapters and all of your MECDA friends and encourage them to send in their OWN ballots!

Thank You,

The Current MECDA Board.

Videos or pictures of my daughter at Gypsylicious

I am looking for anyone who happened to purchase the video, or take a personal copy of the Gypsylicious show this last year--in particular the tail end of it. You see, it was my daughter's public debut on the bellydance scene (literally), and shortly thereafter she was the victim of a tragic accident that left her in a wheelchair. You may recall her--the little eleven-year-old spitfire from Apple Valley, Gwynedd, that shimmied her butt off just before Marjhani and her crew with the black wig cut like an Egyptian painting, and an orange veil. She showed up in December at the end of Jingle All the Way, where she had also been set to perform, in the wheelchair with a crushed femur and humerus. Anyway, she's dancing again now, and is set to solo at Cairo Carnivale, but I'd really like to find some video or photographs of her dancing for her scrapbook. If anyone can help, please let me know.

Thanks!!

Obviously, due to the slacker that I am, I missed the opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, as well as Solstice Greetings and Happy Hanukah. So what did Santa bring you? Anyone willing to brag?

The day after Christmas always brings to light one of the most pressing question of the (remaining) year…What’s everyone doing for New Year’s???

Peace

One of mine is Phil Thornton in which I'm searching.

He along with Fritz Heede & Micheal Beach (with whom I can find all
over the place) are my three sources for the Best BELLY Dance music
I could or would ever want to hear. That's what I used to use/play
all of the time before I once again (after leaving it for a minute)
am 'back into the Dance'.

This time as many of you know..I have a vested interest beyond the
strictly social & entertainment benefits. Namely my newly started
Foundation. And to learn more about it (and me) please go to:
www.myspace.com/linny_g ..plus if you have ANY information on
where
I can find music produced by PHIL THORNTON, then 'e' me
here..thanks!

I might as well tick Tribe off by naming just about all of my other
Group sources (and did I tell you about yahoo.. bellydance.meetup.com/11/memb
er/2226428/ and Bhuz.com :-)?),
~Linny~

PS. And join me at MySpace or here on Tribe as a Friend or Associate if the
Spirit moves you!

(hopefully) a triple MECDA chapter hafla in so cal

Hi there everyone!

The lovely Krisha (of NisaaBenezir) and I would like to organize a red tent hafla! That’s right, a dance party/event focused on bringing the community together. Krisha had the fabulous idea of the DC, MT, and IE chapters jointly hosting it! We would like to have a meeting where we can all talk about our ideas and start organizing this. Our first meeting to discuss the hafla will be either December 10th or 11th so please get back to me and let me know how many of you are willing to come and which date is preferable. Also, we would like to have the meeting at Krisha’s in Lancaster…for those of you from the IE and other areas you can meet me at my house and we can carpool out there if that makes it more convenient.

this is what I got for picnic area fees. I’m going to call them and see what a small group/large group means. So I was wondering, how many people do we think our event would bring in? 50?100?150? or more? Also, do we need an area with a shelter, or not? I was thinking, if we did the large group site without a shelter we could always ask around for tents? Insurance is required but I know that if we contact Helen we can get that.

Small Group sites with shelter $ 50.00

Large group sites without shelter $125.00

Large group sites with shelter & additional facilities $300.00

Food/music: I was thinking that a potluck would be the best way to go…also, as far as music is concerned what do we want to do for that? Boom box? My father in law has a large dj setup but unless we got a large site with electric we wouldn’t be able to do that. I was also thinking that we should try to get some live drummers! That would be really awesome and preferable…We need to bring drinks if it is a MECDA sponsored event right?

Performers: we could just have it be open dancing/sign up at the event!

Workshops: I was talking to Marjhani we were thinking of an event where lots of people just teach something about what they know for free…so kind of like workshops but for free! We could have someone do a costume workshop, stage presence, yoga/pilates, spiritual dance, etc etc….and just have them as a separation from the group to the side. What do you think of that idea?

Entrance fee: I’m pretty sure that if we reserve a spot, parking entrance is free..usually it is $5/vehicle. If we still have to pay for the entrance fee I would say let’s keep the event fee $6 non members /$5 MECDA members. Of course, we could give a $2-3 discount for those that bring food. Basically, we just need to worry about covering the cost of the drinks and the site fee right?

I personally would enjoy either having nametags or having a welcoming/meeting where we can all tell each other our names…I feel that nametags are preferable. We can have an admissions/membership table and of course a table for flyers. One thing to think about is that in May it might be a little windy….

I say let’s just keep it simple…basically just have people bring what they can such as chairs to sit on, possibly some type of rug to cover an area for seating, fabric to cover tables, etc..and I have ribbons and stuff that we can tie to the trees to give a more ‘magical/old time feel.’ I know that the SCA as well as some religious groups have used this venue for things and I can vouch that a little bit of decoration such as ribbons and gorgeous textile tablecloths go a LONG way. The Narrows is absolutely gorgeous and we may luck out and get a spot next to the lake. Think of the picture possibilities!!!!!

So please forward this message to everyone you know…we are hoping to have it be a joint MECDA chapter hosted party…IE, DC, and MT but we have to work on getting approval.

Bring all your ideas please!

Contact me at:

Easier to reach me via email dancingearthgirl@verizon.net

Thanks and hope to hear from all of you!

Hey everyone just wanted to let you all know that I'm back. From some exotic locale, or a much needed trip away from my high desert kingdom. NO, I'm back from the Netherworld of sickness and poor health. In addition I have been concentrating on my student's musical, which they performed on wednesday. And then of course it was Turkey day, which I have the pleasure of hosting at mi casa.
So anyway..yeah, what's up people. How is everyone? I totally feel out of the loop.
Peace(s)

at the risk of starting WW3 topic...http://www.bhuz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14478

I don't want to start a fight or anything, but I feel that those of us that were there and those of us who are fusion dancers have the right to do whatever the hell we want to. Yeah, audience is a big part of performing but do we really do it to get the approval of people? Plus, almost all of us are some sort of fusion dancers...taking two different styles and combing them....then shouldn't we just honor everyone's style of the dance? Not everyone's interpretation of bellydance is going to be the same so if you don't like something kindly leave.. Being ourselves and not doing something because we are afraid of shocking the audience is ridiculous! Of course being curtious at certain venues is a must, but come on!!!

And for the record...she made it pretty obvious that it was the "host of the event" that she was talking about. Burning Incense girls...I LOVE your style and love how you represent yourselves and convey your personalities. ROCK ON!!!!!

PS. Sorry if this is an unwanted topic..if so please delete the thread...please let's all be civil with our opinions and not attack on another but calmly discuss our feelings in a civil manner! Love ya all!

Ok, when I scoped out the map, I figured take 5, then take one of those roads that cross over to 99 before Bakersfield...but mapquest has us going all the way down 5 to Gorman:

I-5 S toward LOS ANGELES. 204.1 miles
CA-138 E toward LANCASTER / PALMDALE. 36.9 miles
CA-14 S / CA-138 E toward LOS ANGELES / LANCASTER. 13.9 miles
Take the CA-138 exit toward PALMDALE / VICTORVILLE. 0.2 miles
Turn LEFT onto W PALMDALE BLVD / CA-138. Continue to follow CA-138 E. 26.0 miles
Turn LEFT onto PEARBLOSSOM HWY / CA-18. Continue to follow CA-18. 23.8 miles
Merge onto I-15 N toward BARSTOW. 4.0 miles
Take the exit toward STODDARD WELLS ROAD. 0.1 miles

But from Bakersfield it says:

CA-99 BUS S / UNION AVE / CA-204 S. 1.4 miles Merge onto CA-58 E toward MOJAVE. 123.5 miles Map
Merge onto I-15 S toward SAN BERNARDINO. 25.7 miles Map
Take the STODDARD WELLS ROAD exit. 0.1 miles Map
Turn RIGHT onto STODDARD WELLS RD.

what's better? I figured we'd be avoiding the grapevine...

HELP!

Jennifer, I emailed you separately with some questions. Anyway, I'll still be there vending and being a spectator:o) I'm so sad....grrrr!

Hey everyone,

Due to my injury I'm going to have to try to sell my workshop spots. I paid $20 each, but I'll take $15 obo for them (yeah I'd rather have spending money than have to sit and watch a workshop and be all depressed).

I have 2 spots in Kami Liddle's Sultry Layers
2 spots in Kami Liddle's Floorwork
2 spots in Jennifers Gypsy drum solo...

You can take them all or pick and choose...I'm telling ya this kind of stuff only happens when you're looking forward to something!

Message me via tribe.net or dancingearthgirl@verizon.net

See everyone this weekend:o)
